What Will Be Covered in PSLE English 2025?

Our PSLE English 2025 curriculum covers all essential components of the exam, ensuring students are well-prepared for the updated syllabus. We focus on Paper 1 (Writing), Paper 2 (Language Use and Comprehension), Listening Comprehension, and Oral Communication.

1. Paper 1: Writing (Updated for 2025)

  • Situational Writing (Revised Format):
The marks allocation for situational writing has been reduced from 15 marks to 14 marks. The format now tests students on a critical thinking/exposure question type, where students are required to demonstrate versatility in both thinking and expression. We train students to analyse prompts carefully and respond clearly while meeting all required content points and communicating with the intended audience.
  • Continuous Writing (Revised Marks Allocation):
Marks for continuous writing have been reduced from 40 marks to 36 marks, with a greater focus on clarity, creativity, and narrative flow. We help students develop their writing by focusing on creating engaging plots, character development, and using a variety of sentence structures. Our programme also incorporates self-editing techniques to improve the quality of their compositions.

2. Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (Updated for 2025)

  • Grammar and Vocabulary:
Grammar and vocabulary remain essential for success in PSLE English. We focus on teaching students to apply grammar rules accurately and use a wide range of vocabulary in context, ensuring they are prepared for all language use components.
  • Visual Text Comprehension (New Question Type):
The Visual Text section now includes a new question type that involves critical thinking. We train students to go beyond surface-level understanding and interpret visual elements, infer deeper meanings, and answer questions that require analysis of the text’s purpose and message.
  • Grammar Cloze and Editing:
This section remains focused on identifying grammatical errors and filling in the correct words to complete passages. We help students sharpen their grammar skills, ensuring they can think critically and accurately when correcting mistakes.
  • Synthesis and Transformation:
Synthesis and transformation tasks now emphasise flexible thinking. We teach students to combine ideas and rephrase sentences using varied structures, ensuring that they maintain the original meaning while showcasing grammatical accuracy.
  • Comprehension (Passages A and B):
The comprehension section remains critical for Paper 2, and we continue to focus on answering in full sentences and using evidence from the text to demonstrate understanding. With the new focus on inference and critical thinking, we ensure students are prepared to engage deeply with the passages and respond thoughtfully to open-ended questions.

3. Listening Comprehension (Updated for 2025)

  • New Question Types:
The Listening Comprehension exam now includes updated question types designed to test students on both comprehension and critical listening skills. Our programme focuses on teaching students to listen attentively, extract key details from spoken texts, and answer multiple-choice questions based on their understanding of the material.
  • Comprehensive Listening Practice:
We provide students with ample practice in listening for important information, identifying implied meanings, and answering questions based on real-life scenarios. This ensures they are well-prepared for the comprehensive listening skills tested in the 2025 exam.

4. Oral Communication (Updated for 2025)

  • Increased Weightage (40 Marks Total):
One of the most significant changes in PSLE 2025 is the increased weightage of the Oral Communication component, which now contributes 40 marks to the overall English score (previously 30 marks). This reflects the MOE’s commitment to fostering stronger verbal communication skills in students.
    • Reading Aloud:
The marks for Reading Aloud have increased from 10 marks to 15 marks. Students will be evaluated on articulation, fluency, and their ability to convey the tone and mood of a passage effectively. We train students to read expressively, paying attention to pronunciation, pacing, and intonation.
    • Stimulus-Based Conversation:
The marks for Stimulus-Based Conversation have increased from 20 marks to 25 marks. This section places a greater emphasis on students’ ability to discuss real-world scenarios. We train students to think critically about the visual prompts, organise their thoughts clearly, and respond confidently with well-structured ideas and personal opinions.
